Overture developed its unique Progressive, Melodic Rock sound while working out the dynamics. In In May of 1995 Overture went into the studio and finalized the album for release a few months later.  This was a very dynamic, technical and precise body of work. A little history about our album World Beyond:

We are IMMENSELY proud of what we accomplished with this album. We feel this album is absolutely unique (pictures below). We recorded this in our rehearsal band house, which is also where our drummer Joe and family lived at the time. Our signer is a trained recording engineer (Recording Workshop), so we took advantage of that.  We were lucky to have multiple rooms, our main rehearsal studio was a great dead room, so we tracked the drums from there. We put our guitar player Chris’s Marshall cabinet in another room, and same with the bass players cabinet, far from the drum room. Since the drummer was in another room, and guitar and bass cabinets were in another room we used an 8 channel pre-powered carver rehearsal studio powered mixer to feed a multi-channel headphone mixer that was fed to each room so all 5 of us could hear what we were playing. For recording we put Chris-guitar player, Scott-bass player and Allen-keyboard player (direct line into the mixer) in the control room. For the control room we cleared out a bedroom and used that as the control room (do you love the blankets we hung up for sound treatment 😊.

For you techies and engineers you can see in the pictures that we used Michael’s-signers portable studio gear, a Fostex R8, and a Fostex 12 channel, 8 subgroup mixer. Tons of rack gear, such as SPX90, Hush II, BBE Unimax, multiple EQ’s, he loves the Alesis micro gear and has a few microverb’s, limiters and compressors. The mics we used were a combination of the SM57’s, SM58’s, PVM38’s, PVM380N and PVM580TN’s.  We ran all this through to Yamaha Studio Monitors using a Yamaha amplifier.   The computer speakers and the large Carver field monitors you see in the pictures were used as secondary monitors for contrast in listening back to the tracks, but also to test the mix.  Since we only had 8 tracks to work with. First Michael used all twelve channels of the board to mix the drums down to two tracks on the R8, when recording drums all other band members played live to a passive mix so Joe could lay all his drum tracks down for all the songs. After we got the right mix for the drums, we recorded Keys, Guitar and bass to 3 more tracks, then solos and tidbits down to another track, leaving two, one for lead vocals and another channel for backup vocals.

Putting down all the tracks took about a week and mixing another week. We often talk about how special the experience was and how proud we were with the final product.  We hope you enjoyed this history about World Beyond. You will see more post like this in the future. Keep on rocking Overlords!!!
